JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – A man was fatally shot by a Jamestown police officer early Tuesday after an armed confrontation outside Fred’s Den bar.

Stutsman County 911 dispatch received a call at 1:17 a.m. reporting a man in the bar’s parking lot armed with a gun and a knife. The caller stated the man had been involved in a physical altercation inside the bar and was removed before returning outside with weapons.

While officers were en route, the caller reported that the man began firing multiple rounds at the building. The first officer on the scene found the suspect actively shooting in the parking lot.

According to the release, the officer ordered the man to drop his weapon. When the suspect refused and continued to pose a threat, the officer shot him. The suspect, struck by gunfire, was incapacitated.

Officers provided immediate first aid, and the man was transported to Jamestown Regional Medical Center, where he later died. His identity is being withheld pending notification of family.

The North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) is leading the inquiry into the incident. The officers involved have been placed on standard administrative leave during the investigation.

The Stutsman County Sheriff’s Office, Jamestown Area Ambulance, and the ND BCI assisted at the scene.
