ABERDEEN, S.D. (NSU) – Northern State University (NSU) is proud to announce that Seth Martens, a physical education major in the teacher education program, has been awarded the Schaefer Scholarship for the 2024 academic year. This $1,000 scholarship, named in honor of the late educator Gloria Schaefer, is awarded annually to one junior or senior attending a South Dakota college.

Seth Martens, a 2019 graduate of Aberdeen Central High School, has shown dedication to the Aberdeen community. Dr. Chelsee Shortt, chair and assistant professor of the Department of Sports Science, who nominated Seth for the scholarship, commended his qualities, stating, “Seth is an excellent teacher and will contribute significantly to the field. He embodies high-quality physical education, and any school would benefit from having him on staff. Seth is a kind, thoughtful, and genuine individual who aligns perfectly with the standards of this scholarship.”

The Schaefer Scholarship honors the legacy of Gloria Schaefer, a beloved teacher and motivational speaker known for her positive and encouraging demeanor. Her family continues her legacy by providing this annual scholarship to a student who exemplifies Schaefer’s energy, selflessness, and dedication to others. The scholarship criteria include academic success, integrity, and a humble appreciation of family, friends, and strangers.

Seth Martens’ commitment to education, community service, and personal growth makes him a deserving recipient of this award. When asked about receiving the scholarship, Seth remarked, “After getting to know Gloria Schaefer and her legacy, I am inspired by how she has continuously made an impact on her family, community, and simply everyone who was surrounded by her. I can take her legacy with me in my future as a teacher and a coach as I try to make a lasting impact on those around me. A few quick liners from Gloria I will take away include ‘Fill your life with gratitude,’ ‘Appreciate every moment,’ and ‘Look for the good.’ I want to thank Tonya, Bart, and the rest of their family for honoring me with the Mrs. Schaefer Scholarship.”
